Lady Lakers Win Big in Home Opener
Women's basketball took their home floor for the first time this season on Monday, November 5th. The Lakers played host to the Lake Michigan College Red Hawks. The game would serve as one final tune-up before the ladies enter a gauntlet of a non-conference schedule.
Despite a slow start the first three or four minutes of the game, the Lakers fast-paced, physical game would propel them to a hefty 30-6 advantage after the first quarter. The Lakers offense began humming in the second quarter. Shots began to fall from the perimeter, the ladies got out in transition, and turned the game into a track meet. They took a 64-18 lead into the locker room at halftime over the visiting Red Hawks.
The second half was much of the same. The Lakers were able to play multiple rotations and get all of the ladies some time on the floor. The Lakers would cruise to a 119-43 victory.
Rachel Resio led the scoring for the Lakers with 23 points. Resio shot 50% from the floor, and 7-13 from three. She also added 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals. Chloe Watson was next up for the Lakers in scoring with 16 points on 50% shooting. Watson also dished out 6 assists and grabbed a pair of steals. Jiaryatou Cisse scored 14 points on 6-9 shooting from the floor. The 14 points Cisse accumulated was her career-high as a Laker. She flirted with a double-double, grabbing 9 rebounds, 6 of them coming on the offensive glass. Addysen Gray and Leah Helsel each added 11 points to round out the double digit scorers for the Lakers. The ladies distributed the ball well, and saw a wide range of contributions in the scoring column. They saw thirteen girls score in the contest, while five of them amassed double digit scoring.
The Lakers will now look ahead to some upcoming, high-level opponents on their schedule. First, Saturday, November 9th the ladies travel to Rockford, Illinois to take on #6 Rock Valley College. Once the ladies return home, Thursday, November 14th begins the Thumbcoast Tip-Off Classic, hosted by Saint Clair County Community College in Port Huron. The Lakers begin their invitational schedule with #3 Mesa Community College. From there, they'll find themselves placed into a bracket. The remainder of the field consists of the likes of:
- #4 CCBC Essex
- #5 Union College
- #7 Lake Land College
- #18 Harcum College
- #21 Saint Clair County CC
- Lansing CC (RV)
The loaded field will present the Lakers high-level competition, regardless of how the tournament shakes out. But first, the Lakers will focus their attention on #6 Rock Valley on the road November 9th.
