MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Mid Michigan College baseball team has opened their season with an 8-5 overall record under new head coach Danny Smith. The Lakers posted a 6-3 record on their spring break trip to Myrtle Beach, while most recently earning a doubleheader sweep over Olivet on Wednesday (Mar. 19th).
Mid will now get ready to travel to Sandusky, Ohio and Sports Force Park to face multiple MCCAA opponents. The MCCAA put this together in order to get conference games in, and the Lakers will open on Friday (Mar. 28th) against Grand Rapids Community College and Alpena. Following Friday's games, Mid will take on Muskegon and Bay on Saturday, before closing the weekend against Delta on Sunday.
SCOUTING GRCC: The Raiders enter the weekend 7-12 overall and 2-0 in conference play, most recently earning a doubleheader sweep of Alpena on Friday (Mar. 21st). Leading the team offensively is Ty Sandwick with a .373 batting average, while Joey Hysell is hitting .327 with two home runs and 11 RBIs. On the mound, Thano Klett has pitched 20.1 innings and posted a 1.77 ERA, while throwing one complete game.
SCOUTING ALPENA: ACC is 4-16 overall and 0-2 in MCCAA play. The Lumberjacks are led by Nate Koster with a .346 batting average, one home run, and 10 RBIs. Another player to watch is Brett Moroschan with a team high 12 RBIs. On the mound Kaleb Donajkowski sports a 2-1 record, while Max Coughlin is 1-2 in 15.2 innings pitched.
SCOUTING MUSKEGON: The Jayhawks have struggled this year and enter this weekend 2-12 overall. Bryce Luevano leads the team at the plate, hitting .324 with seven RBIs. Sean Shooltz is the pitcher to watch with a 1-0 record and 3.46 ERA in 13.0 innings pitched.
SCOUTING BAY: Bay enters this weekend on a three game winning streak with a 4-4 overall record. The Lakers and Norse were supposed to meet last weekend at Mount Pleasant High School, however due to weather conditions, that series has been postponed and will be made up at a later date. Shane Lievsay leads the team offensively with a .294 batting average. Cameron Street has drove in five runs in eight games. Cohen Thompson is the pitcher to watch with a 2-0 record, 2.57 ERA, and 14.0 innings pitched.
SCOUTING DELTA: The Pioneers are 5-6 overall and are coming off a sweep of Community Christian College on Wednesday (Mar. 19th). At the plate Layke Hornung has gone 13-of-25 for a .520 average in nine games played. On the mound Devin Schular has posted a 2.89 ERA in 9.1 innings pitched.
A LOOK AT THE LAKERS: The Lakers are led by Tyler Schultz offensively, as the freshman is hitting .455 with 11 RBIs. Caleb Thomas has driven in 10, Connor Bryan has driven in eight runs. On the mound, David Wheeler is 3-0 with a 0.75 ERA, including a no-hitter on spring break which garnered him MCCAA Player of the Week honors on March 18th. Also earning MCCAA POTW honors was Eddie McDonald after he slashed .615/.667/.692 with three stolen bases and five runs scored. Another Laker pitcher to watch is Donovan Heugh with a 1.72 ERA in 15.2 innings pitched with one complete game.
UP NEXT: Following the Ohio trip, the Lakers will travel to Lansing Community College to take on the Stars in a nine-inning contest at 2:00 PM Tuesday (Apr. 1st).
