Lakers Drop Opening Round Game in Thumbcoast Classic, 90-74.
Port Huron, MI - The Mid Michigan College Lakers and the Monroe Community College Tribunes found themselves locked in a offensive struggle on Wednesday night, with neither team able to establish a consistent rhythm in a rugged, physical contest.
Mid struck first, jumping out to a 10–4 lead by the 15-minute mark. A deep three from Vince Overshown pushed the Lakers' advantage to double digits with 12 minutes remaining, giving Mid early control in a game where every point felt earned.
Both teams, however, quickly found scoring to be a challenge. The physicality on both ends turned possessions into grinds, and the scoreboard reflected it. Mid held a narrow 22–21 edge with 6:43 left as both offenses continued to search for flow.
Monroe finally broke through late in the half, catching fire from long range. Three straight three-pointers flipped the momentum and put the Tribunes ahead 32–28 with just over two minutes remaining. The Lakers struggled from beyond the arc, shooting just 3-of-17 from deep in the first half, but managed to stay within striking distance.
Despite Monroe's surge, Mid battled back to keep the game tight, heading into the locker room down just 36–35 in what had become a grind-it-out, possession-by-possession contest.
The Lakers came out firing to start the second half. Christian Zielinski buried back-to-back threes, tying the game at 43–all and energizing the Mid bench. After Monroe nudged ahead by one, Zack Parks stepped into a confident three from the top of the key, putting Mid back on top 46–45 with 16 minutes to play.
From there, however, the Tribunes took control. Monroe strung together a decisive run, holding the Lakers scoreless for several minutes until Bryce White finally halted the drought with a much-needed three—but by then Mid faced a nine-point deficit. The Tribunes continued to pour it on, attacking the lane and converting dribble drives and dishes to pull away for good.
Monroe closed out the night with a 90–74 victory, securing a spot in the semifinals, while Mid Michigan will take on Coastal Alabama - North tomorrow at 3pm in the fifth place bracket.
Offensively, the Lakers were led by reigning MCCAA North Player of the Week Zack Parks with 16 points and nine rebounds while Zielinski (13) and Overshown (12) both hit double digits.
